The Memphis Grizzlies have served as a big surprise in the 2013 NBA Playoffs. Of course Zach Randolph is known as an all-star around the league and 7-footer Marc Gasol was named the Defensive Player of the Year, but honestly, many people did not expect the Grizzlies to make it all the way to the Western Conference Finals. A lot of their success can be attributed to strong inside play and stifling defensive efforts. With great defense from players such as All NBA Defensive 1st teamers Tony Allen and Marc Gasol, Memphis has really created a special opportunity for themselves. They have defense, multiple scoring options and a solid concept of team basketball.
The next challenge that Memphis faces is against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are a group full of savvy veterans but do not be shocked if you ask your friends about who will win this matchup and they reply, “Grizzlies!” in a jubilant manner. Memphis is starting to convince NBA fans that they are not a joke. They possess a great nucleus of players that do just about anything to win. Diving for loose balls and making the extra pass are actions that head coach Lionel Hollins has obviously stressed to his squad because those are the little things that are getting Memphis over the hump against heavily favored teams like the Thunder and Clippers in the postseason. If the Grizzlies can continue to get their big men to dominate the paint, lock up at all five positions and have great guard play from the likes of Mike Conley and Jerryd Bayless, then the sky is the limit! San Antonio needs to come prepared because the Grizzlies are going to put their big ol’ bear paws on them and they will not let up off of the gas until the clock reaches zero. Game 1 of the series between the Spurs and Grizzlies is coming up on Sunday at 3:30 ET. Get your popcorn ready because any time Memphis is set to come out on the floor, expect a show!
