Before all of you NBA fans and analysts start pointing the finger at Carmelo Anthony as the reason for the Knicks’ downfall, take a look at the big picture.
Anthony is not exactly having the most efficient season of his career but efficiency is not his game. Scoring is what he brings to the table and he is doing that quite well this season.
Anthony is 2nd in the league in scoring at 25.9 points per game and his 9.9 boards per contest have him tied for 11th in the NBA in rebounding. In fact, Anthony leads all small forwards in rebounding in the entire NBA.
People can nitpick and say that Anthony’s 43.1% from the field and 28.8% from three-point land is killing the Knicks but he is honestly the only consistent player on the team. Yes, that is right. The only one grinding it out every night!
Let’s start with Andrea Bargnani. Sometimes he shows up and sometimes he isn’t even in the building. Bargnani’s 15.4 points and 5.2 rebounds are a testament to his inconsistency. The guy is 7’0″ and 250 pounds for crying out loud! He can get more than five boards per game.
J.R. Smith, who was last year’s Sixth Man of the Year in the NBA, is only putting up just over 11 points per game. Come on J.R.. You are better than that.
The guard play for the Knicks looks suspect as well. Iman Shumpert is a great defender but just doesn’t provide enough offense. Raymond Felton is good but he is not a “great” point guard by any means. Pablo Prigioni plays hard but he can’t stick with guys like Ty Lawson and John Wall every night. Tim Hardaway Jr. is having a good rookie season but the Knicks can’t rely on a rookie to be their savior.
The Knicks are banged up. Tyson Chandler is still hurt and that is a big key to the Knicks’ defense. Let’s not talk about Amar’e Stoudemire because his injuries have taken such a toll on his body that he just isn’t the same Stoudemire that the NBA is used to seeing.
There are many things that have resulted in the Knicks being 4-13 and second to last in the Eastern Conference standings. However, Anthony is trying his best to get his team more wins than they have been getting so far. Many criticize Anthony for being a ball hog but if the poor guy doesn’t have anybody to pass it to, then he has to do something with the ball. Some NBA fans are screaming for Anthony to be traded but he is the best thing that the Knicks have. There is no denying that when Anthony gets the ball that the offense just stops but if the Knicks get rid of him, then New York will lose one of the most gifted, if not the most gifted scorer in the NBA. The Knicks have quite a challenge on their hands as they try to figure out how to get on the winning track.
